Mailgun Logo

Want to integrate Mailgun into Ghost and Wordpress? Here’s how. Mailgun is Rackspace’s bulk mail offering. It supports both API and traditional SMTP services. It can also both send and receive and can be used with your own domain without impacting your usual e-mail server. The first 10,00 e-mails a month are free too. You don’t even need to add a credit card however if you do you get a few extra benefits including:

  • 30 days of log history retention instead of 2
  • Add up to 1000 custom domains instead of 5
  • Add dedicated IPs (for a additional $59/mth)

Getting things setup for Ghost is really easy as they teamed up to make an official configuration generator. You can check it out here: http://ghost.mailgun.com/

Wordpress wise there is an official plugin too which you can get from here: https://wordpress.org/plugins/mailgun/

Where as Ghost only works with SMTP right now Wordpress can support either the HTTPS (SSL) based API or SMTP.

If you are using a firewall such as on either through AWS EC2 or through IPtables or UFW then you need to add a rule to allow outbound traffic through port 25 or 587. I was going to use port 465 however it has recently been re-purposed by IANA for URL Rendesvous Directory for Source Specific Multicast apparently!
